Columbia River plume patterns in summer 2004 as revealed by a hindcast coastal ocean circulation model

چکیده
[1] Model hindcasts of the Columbia River (CR) plume and coastal ocean circulation in summer 2004 are used to describe the subtidal evolution of plume patterns in response to local wind and to examine the plume influence on shelf circulation. It is found that a bi-directional plume occurs frequently on the Washington/Oregon shelf, during weak upwelling favorable wind events, during weakening of moderate upwelling favorable wind events, and during weak downwelling events. The high frequency of occurrence of the north plume branch indicates that the CR water will have a significant influence on the Washington shelf in summer. Citation: Liu, Y., P. MacCready, and B. M. River and Freshwater Influences
A coupled circulation-and-ecosystem model, developed as part of the RISE (River Influences on Shelf Ecosystems) program, is used to examine the role of the Columbia River plume in shaping broad patterns of nutrient flux and primary production on the Washington and Oregon coasts. Realistic simulations of summer 2004 and 2005 in ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) are forced by winds from the M...
متن کاملA Model of Non-Stationary Time-Series to Predict Surface Salinity Off-Shore the Columbia River
The Columbia River discharge plays a central role in North-East Pacific Ocean coastal ecosystem dynamics. A model is developed to predict non-stationary surface-salinity time-series in the North Pacific Ocean off-shore the Columbia River. The model takes wind velocities and Columbia River discharge as inputs only. Wind velocities are converted to smoothed wind stresses which are then integrated...
متن کاملSeasonal Changes in Bacterial and Archaeal Gene Expression Patterns across Salinity Gradients in the Columbia River Coastal Margin
Through their metabolic activities, microbial populations mediate the impact of high gradient regions on ecological function and productivity of the highly dynamic Columbia River coastal margin (CRCM). A 2226-probe oligonucleotide DNA microarray was developed to investigate expression patterns for microbial genes involved in nitrogen and carbon metabolism in the CRCM. Initial experiments with t...
متن کاملTitle of Dissertation : SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF BACTERIOPLANKTON COMMUNITIES ACROSS RIVER TO OCEAN ENVIRONMENTAL GRADIENTS
Bacterioplankton communities are deeply diverse within and across environments, yet also display repeatable patterns over seasonal and annual time scales. I assessed patterns of bacterioplankton community variability across the Columbia River coastal margin over space and time. Coastal zones encompass a complex spectrum of environmental gradients, which impact the composition of bacterioplankto...
